2019 Racer Profiles

Mbaluka “Luka” Michael Mutinda, 28, Dallas, TX

“A foodie in the desert with freeze-dried food.”

Six-stage racer

Family:  I’m a dog dad.

Occupation:  I have worked in pizza software for the past four years. I am  also involved in some Dallas non-profit organizations and very active in East African art.

Personal history in ultra running:  None. I have done some trail races, half marathons and marathons but nothing nearly as intense as an ultra.

How did you hear about TPU:  A buddy of mine who is into these types of adventure races suggested TPU.

Have you been to the Big Bend area before:  Yes, I have been to the area and I am obsessed with Marfa, partly due to the area’s landscape but mainly because of the town’s remarkable art scene.

Goals for TPU: Maintain a slow and steady pace, I just want to complete these 6 stages and be gucci.

How’s your training been:  Not gonna lie, it’s been a REAL struggle. At this point I am just singing Jesus take the wheel.

What has been the most helpful thing you’ve done in your prep for TPU?  I’ve found it very helpful to mix strength training in between my running. Outside of training, prayer & meditation.

What do you love besides running:  I love food. I can eat and talk about food(s) all day.

“The most authentic thing about us is our capacity to create, to overcome, to endure, to transform, to love and to be greater than our suffering.”
