Although, I’ve made the 7 hour drive from Austin to Big Bend countless times now, I’m always excited because I know a new adventure will unfold. Passing first through the Hill Country, I pass by vineyards, farms and ranches as small towns come and go with a blink of the eye. After only a few hours the view begins its transformation from rolling hills to the more expansive land of West Texas. Well known for oil fields around Midland & Odessa – and the movie “Friday Night Lights”, West Texas is captivating in natural abundance and history which can be experienced in towns such as Fort Davis. And let’s not forget the hidden gems along the way including Monahans State Park, which features spectacular sand dunes, and the Caverns of Sonora which I still have not visited!
